Two and a half thousand years, three stops
From ancient Sparta to Byzantine Mystras to the Mani's tower clans
Same valley, three completely different Spartas — the militarized city-state, the last flowering of Byzantine culture, and the semi-independent clan world of the Mani. This is the order that makes the timeline make sense, not the driving order.
Ancient Sparta
The Sparta of Thermopylae and the Peloponnesian War wasn't a walled city — its "wall" was famously its army, and it left few grand ruins compared to Athens or Mystras. What's visible today (an acropolis site, a theatre, foundations) reflects a city that spent its resources on military training, not monuments.
Modern Sparti sits on the same site — this is a rebuilt 1834 town, not a preserved ancient one.

Byzantine Mystras
Built in 1249 by William II of Villehardouin as a Frankish crusader castle, then ceded to the Byzantine Empire in 1262 after Villehardouin's capture at the Battle of Pelagonia. Byzantine settlers moved up from ancient Sparta in the valley below, and by 1348 Mystras was the seat of the Despotate of Morea — the last major center of Byzantine power in Greece.
The result was the Palaiologan Renaissance: churches, frescoes, and a school of scholarship that outlasted Constantinople's fall by only a few years. Mystras fell to the Ottomans in 1460. UNESCO listed the site in 1989.

The Mani's tower clans
While Mystras rose and fell, the Mani peninsula stayed semi-independent through most of Ottoman rule — a rugged, hard-to-tax corner of the Peloponnese where local clans built defensive stone towers, partly against outsiders and partly against each other in long-running vendettas. Villages like Vathia are the visible result: dense clusters of tower-houses built for defense, not display.
